NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Data science training provider Metis has hired Dr. Deborah Berebichez as its Chief Data Scientist, a newly created role for the growing business. In this role, Dr. Berebichez will oversee and further develop Metis’ expanding suite of data science program and course offerings, which includes the industry’s only accredited intensive data science bootcamp (New York City and San Francisco), a data visualization course with D3.JS, and a Big Data course that teaches Hadoop and Spark, as well as professional development and corporate training.
An academic trailblazer, Dr. Berebichez made history in 2004 when she became the first Mexican-born woman to earn a Ph.D. in physics at Stanford University, where she worked with two physics Nobel Laureates: Robert Laughlin and the former U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu. In addition to her academic expertise in the sciences, Dr. Berebichez also has a degree in philosophy and experience across multiple disciplines including professional theater, story-writing and modeling. Co-host of the Discovery Channel’s Outrageous Acts of Science TV show and a regular guest expert on CNN, Nova and other shows, Dr. Berebichez is able to apply her unique blend of skills to break down complex science and data concepts for the average viewer. Together with Moody’s Foundation and an executive team from Girls Inc., she helped develop the first data science curriculum for high school girls in the U.S. Most recently, as a Principal Data Scientist at ThoughtWorks she helped companies use data-driven approaches as a strategic advantage. Using her expertise in scientific research and advanced analysis she helped automate decision-making and uncover patterns in large amounts of data. She specializes in drawing connections between the approaches used in Data Science and the challenges organizations face. By leveraging data-smart architectures, advanced scientific models and adaptive software, she helped companies convert enterprise data into actionable tools.
“Dr. Berebichez will be a stellar addition to our team, given her phenomenal experience and skill set as well as her passion for making data science approachable and appealing to a wide range of audiences,” says Jason Moss, Co-Founder and General Manager of Metis. “Interest in Metis programs has been fantastic, and having Dr. Berebichez on board will only accelerate our ability to meet the needs of working and aspiring data science professionals with expanded training and educational offerings.”
“I’m excited to join Metis, as it is leading the way in developing data science skills for today’s economy. Many companies realize the need for technical skills training, and we’re also seeing a growing number of technically-trained professionals claiming the title of data scientist,” says Dr. Deborah Berebichez. “Where Metis has distinguished itself is in training beyond the technical know-how to develop a more holistic skill set that also includes the deeper critical thinking, problem solving and communications skills that make for a successful data scientist. I’m looking forward to furthering the Metis approach to new audiences.”
