STAMFORD, Conn.--()--Viridian Energy, one of America’s leading providers of affordable, responsible energy, today announced that a Port Chester, New York-based family in need is the first recipient of a solar energy system sponsored by the company’s new pay-it-forward program, Sun Plus One™. As part of the program, Viridian donates one solar power system for every 15 new residential solar installations, lowering energy costs for low-income families while supporting the growth of renewable energy.

Viridian’s first domestic Sun Plus One installation was completed in partnership with GRID Alternatives, a non-profit organization that works with volunteers to install solar energy systems for low-income homeowners both in the U.S. and abroad. Volunteers from Viridian’s corporate team, including Viridian CEO and Founder, Michael Fallquist, worked with professionals from GRID Alternatives to install the solar energy system.

“Giving back to our local communities through hands-on volunteer work has been core to Viridian’s mission since the company was founded in 2009,” said Cami Boehme, Chief Strategy Officer, Viridian Energy. “I know our more than 20,000 Independent Viridian Associates join me in our deep commitment to making responsible energy affordable for more consumers nationwide. And we’re pleased to roll-up our sleeves for this family and broaden the positive, collective impact of all Viridian customers.”

“Last winter I waited as long as possible to turn on my heat because I was cutting corners to lower my energy bills,” said Homeowner Zenaida Beltran. “I never considered solar but then a trusted friend explained how it could benefit me. Now, I’m looking forward to my new solar system taking the stress out of high energy bills. Every little bit counts. And I’m grateful to GRID and Viridian for making it possible.”

Since 2009, Viridian customers have helped avoid more than five billion pounds of climate-changing CO2 from being released into the atmosphere through the use of the company’s responsible energy products. In keeping with its sustainability mission, Viridian Energy also hosts regular events in all the company’s U.S. markets including cleanups, tree plantings and donation drives. To date, Viridian has logged over 8,000 domestic volunteer hours and collected over 66,000 pounds of trash.

Viridian Energy has also made an impact worldwide. Since 2011, the company has completed a major corporate social responsibility project on a different continent each year including reforestation in Brazil's Amazon rainforest and solar power installations on schools, homes and community centers in Ghana, Indonesia, Fiji and Nicaragua. Donations through the Sun Plus One program also enable women in developing nations to train as solar engineers and install solar panels in their own off-grid villages. Viridian works with a number of organizations to facilitate these projects around the globe.

“If we are going to have a successful transition to clean energy, we need to include all of our communities,” said GRID Alternatives Tri-State Executive Director Kate Shackford. “We’re grateful for Viridian’s support.”

As more U.S. consumers choose to go solar with Viridian, the Sun Plus One program will help more families benefit from solar around the world.
