National law firm Robins Kaplan LLP secured a $9.1 million jury verdict for a 51-year old auto mechanic who was paralyzed from the waist down following surgery for a perforated bowel in Minneapolis (Joseph W. Lakoskey v. Anesthesiology P.A.).
In February 2012, a severely dehydrated Mr. Lakoskey underwent surgery for a perforated bowel at a hospital in Minneapolis. He was not given adequate fluids prior to surgery. As a result, Mr. Lakoskey suffered a prolonged period of low blood pressure after anesthesia was administered. This caused a critical lack of blood flow to Mr. Lakoskey’s spinal cord, permanently damaging the cord and leaving him paralyzed.
After a nine-day trial and eight hours of deliberations over two days, the jury found that the anesthesiologist’s negligence caused Mr. Lakoskey’s spinal cord injury.
