Sorenson Forensics Assists in Testing Sexual Assault Evidence Kit Stockpile in Michigan

  • Sorenson Forensics Tested More Than 4,000 Kits During 2014

SALT LAKE CITY--()--Sorenson Forensics, under contract by the Michigan State Police, recently helped reduce a significant stockpile of unsubmitted sexual assault evidence kits from the city of Detroit. Sorenson used advanced DNA testing to process 4,055 kits over 24 months.

In 2009, over 11,000 untested kits were discovered in a former police storage warehouse in Detroit. In 2013, Michigan legislators approved a $4 million allocation from the state budget to fund the processing of these kits.

Sorenson Forensics is an innovative leader in the forensic community that has worked with law enforcement agencies across the country to help reduce backlogs, and utilizes the most advanced and precise methods and technologies when testing DNA evidence. One such technology is Y-screening, a more cost-effective and sensitive alternative to traditional microscopy for the detection of male DNA in evidence samples, which allows forensic scientists to analyze evidence more quickly without sacrificing quality.

With the evidence extracted and analyzed, the MSP reviews and submits the DNA profiles to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) – the FBI’s repository of more than 13 million DNA profiles contributed by forensic laboratories – to look for matches in this national database of samples.

“DNA profiles play a major role in solving sexual assaults and other crimes, and the highly effective screening process and testing guidelines at Sorenson Forensics have allowed us to quickly and accurately produce reliable results,” said Camilla Green, business development manager and forensics DNA expert at Sorenson Forensics. “It’s hugely satisfying for us to have participated in resolving this large backlog for the City of Detroit, and hope it will ultimately lead to closure for the victims of these crimes.”
