Smiths Detection Inc. Expert to Present at 26th Annual Continuing Challenge HazMat Emergency Response Workshop

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--()--Smiths Detection Inc. (SDI) hazmat expert Dr. Chris Weber will give two presentations geared toward emergency responders at one of the top conferences in the industry, the 26th Annual Continuing Challenge HazMat Emergency Response Workshop.

The Continuing Challenge Workshop, which will take place September 8-11 in Sacramento, CA, provides training, networking, and learning opportunities for those employed in fields related to emergency hazmat response, and features skilled presenters who give students the most recent information to help them grow their skills.

Terry Gibson, President of SDI, said, “SDI is committed to providing first responders with the tools and training needed to help them remain safe as they protect and serve their communities in volatile and dangerous conditions. SDI is able to offer the tailored solutions it is known for by working closely with our customers. Those relationships are only deepened through opportunities to interact in person at conferences like this.”

For the first presentation, on Tuesday, “Tactical Chemistry for Emergency Responders,” Dr. Weber will partner with Dana von Kolen, a training manager. Described as “not your average chemistry class,” the duo will show how chemistry impacts product behavior and the detection and identification of unknown materials. They will also explore best practices and mitigation tools and techniques in hazardous materials response. The chemistry of hazardous materials will come alive through scenario-based demonstrations and chemical identification exercises using basic and advanced detection and identification equipment.

In his second presentation, on Thursday afternoon, “Smoke Content and Turnout Gear Contamination? How Exposed Are You?” Dr. Weber will present on the types of toxic chemicals and carcinogens in smoke, and help first responders understand how operating in smoke conditions affects them, through use of thorough gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis.
