SWANA 2015 Excellence Award Goes to SAFE Disposal Events Run by DSNY, Electronic Recyclers International and Veolia Environmental Services

NEW YORK--()--Electronic Recyclers International (ERI), the nation’s leading recycler of electronics, has announced that the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has been named the winner of the 2015 Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Silver Excellence Award in the Special Waste category. The Department received the award yesterday for the “NYC SAFE Disposal Events” it developed in partnership with ERI and Veolia Environmental Services. The award was presented at SWANA’s annual conference, WASTECON, in Orlando, Florida.

To help residents dispose of harmful household products safely and responsibly, DSNY, ERI and Veolia host SAFE (Solvents, Automotive, Flammables and Electronics) Disposal Events throughout the City of New York.

“Our SAFE Disposal Events give New Yorkers an opportunity to get potentially harmful household materials out of their homes and we help keep these items out of landfills,” said Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia. “This year, to keep up with the growing popularity of the program, we have doubled the number of events to two per borough. They are quick and convenient. Thank you to SWANA for recognizing our commitment to keeping harmful and hazardous materials out of the waste stream.”

As part of the SAFE events, ERI manages the collection, handling and reuse or recycling of electronic waste, while Veolia collects, handles and recycles or disposes of household hazardous waste.

ERI has a long-term contract with the City of New York, with the cost of services covered by electronics manufacturers under the NYS Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act.

Since 2012, DSNY has collected more than 2.2 million pounds of harmful products from more than 27,000 SAFE Disposal Event participants.

“We are honored to participate in this important, constructive and now award-winning collaboration with the great City of New York and our friends at Veolia,” said John Shegerian, Chairman and CEO of ERI. “That we now regularly provide events for the responsible recycling of electronics and other hazardous waste items for New Yorkers is a huge accomplishment. As someone who was born and raised in New York City, it’s a humbling and rewarding experience to be able to help so many in our city do the right thing and collect and recycle their e-waste - the fastest growing waste stream in the world today - to keep toxic electronics out of New York landfills.”

SWANA’s Excellence Awards Program recognizes outstanding solid waste programs and facilities that advance the practice of environmentally and economically sound solid waste management through their commitment to utilizing effective technologies and processes in system design and operations, advancing worker and community health and safety, and implementing successful public education and outreach programs. Programs also must demonstrate they are fiscally and environmentally responsible through compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations.
