GumGum Hires John Weisgerber as Senior Vice President of Sales; Visual Web Platform Expands Executive Team for Rapid Growth

Hearst Corp., Forbes Media and Yahoo! Internet Life Magazine veteran joins hyper growth adtech company

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--()--GumGum, the leading digital marketing platform for the visual web, today announced that John Weisgerber has joined the company as Senior Vice President of Sales. With twenty five years of sales leadership experience, Weisgerber joins GumGum with a track record of building profitable online businesses and driving revenue. Weisgerber’s hire heightens GumGum’s ability to meet the rapidly growing demand for in-image advertising opportunities from both agencies and brands. GumGum recently raised $26 million in venture funding from Morgan Stanley Expansion Capital, which is being used, in part, to expand sales and marketing functions within the organization.

“At GumGum, our mission is to add value to every connected image. As the visual web continues its rise, the ability for brands to captivate consumers through visuals becomes increasingly essential,” said Ophir Tanz, Chief Executive Officer, GumGum. “With John’s deep experience in visual storytelling and brand building across fashion, beauty and retail, GumGum is better positioned than ever to achieve our mission.”

Prior to joining GumGum, Weisgerber served most recently as Executive Director of Digital Advertising at Hearst Corp. in its Fashion and Luxury Collection, which includes Elle.com, HarpersBazaar.com, MarieClaire.com, and TownandCountryMag.com. Before joining Hearst Corp., Weisgerber worked as Vice President of Digital Advertising of Hachette Filipacchi Media overseeing sales and operations for a network of twelve sites. Prior to that, he worked for five years at Forbes Media where he was Group Advertising Director of Forbes.com. John began his career at Ziff-Davis Publishing as the Associate Publisher of Yahoo! Internet Life.

“Nothing is more native than an advertisement within an image; it’s dynamic without corrupting the content itself, which is truly unique. With this technology, GumGum allows advertisers to tell a story within a story,” said Weisgerber. “I believe in-image advertising is the best kept secret in the industry and my goal in joining GumGum is to have every advertiser and agency recognize it as the effective communications solution that it is. As user interest in the right rail dwindles, every premium brand must seek to participate in new areas. It’s been proven that images are the most meaningful area for user attention and engagement so it’s an exciting time to join a team that also has the sophisticated science, deep data hold and creative spirit to deliver a visual ad experience that is contextually relevant, captivating and scalable.”
