Travelers Announces Community Support of Nearly $22 Million in 2014

HARTFORD, Conn.--()--Travelers (NYSE: TRV) today announced the publication of its 2014 Community Giving Report. Titled “Communities of Opportunity,” the report details the company’s philanthropic and volunteer initiatives in 2014, including contributions of nearly $22 million through corporate funding and the Travelers Foundation to organizations focused on academic and career success, developing thriving neighborhoods, and enhancing lives through arts and culture.

“We strive to provide opportunities for success through our giving,” said Marlene Ibsen, President and CEO of the Travelers Foundation and Vice President of Community Relations at Travelers. “We’re proud to have supported the great work of outstanding partners in 2014 and of the contributions our employees made through a host of volunteer projects in their communities.”

Additional highlights from the Travelers 2014 Community Giving Report include:

  • Approximately 47 percent of Travelers’ corporate giving supported causes and organizations that work to improve academic and career success for underrepresented students.
    • As part of Travelers EDGE® (Empowering Dreams for Graduation and Employment), the company’s career pipeline program, 125 undergraduate students in Hartford, Conn., St. Paul, Minn., and Baltimore, Md., continued their studies.
  • 18 percent of charitable funds went toward developing thriving neighborhoods.
  • 13 percent of charitable funds supported organizations focused on enhancing lives through arts and culture.
  • Other charitable contributions were used to match employee gifts, and to support projects in health and social services, civic and public affairs, and disaster relief.
  • Travelers employees contributed approximately 70,000 volunteer hours to 163 company volunteer projects in 36 states.
    • More than $1 million was generated through employee volunteer engagement in 2014, including $365,000 to support 40 Habitat for Humanity® building projects across the U.S.

“Travelers EDGE, to me, is the opportunity to fully pursue and focus on higher education to better myself and the world around me,” said Bonnie Geving, a Travelers EDGE scholar and senior at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minn. Geving will graduate in December 2015 with a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics and Risk Management, and is working toward a career as an actuary.

Through corporate funding and the Travelers Foundation, Travelers targets its giving to three key priorities: academic and career success, developing thriving neighborhoods, and enhancing lives through arts and culture. With the primary focus of educating underrepresented students to lead tomorrow’s workforce, Travelers also contributes to organizations that aid in developing communities through small business support and neighborhood revitalization, and enriching lives and learning through arts and culture.
