Fairfax 2015 Kicks Off the World Police & Fire Games on June 26

WHAT:

The World Police & Fire Games (WPFG) are the second largest global multi-sport event, surpassed only by the Summer Olympics. This free event draws thousands of athletes from police, fire, and other public safety agencies – representing over 60 countries – to compete in 1,600 medal events across 60 sports competitions. An estimated 30,000 visitors will travel to the Washington, D.C. area for the Games over the course of the 10-day event. All events are free and open to the public. Over 5,000 volunteers have registered to work the event.
 

WHEN:

June 26 to July 5, 2015
 

WHERE:

The Games will take place at 52 different venues throughout the Washington metropolitan area, 70 percent of which are located in Fairfax County. The Opening Ceremony will be held at RFK Stadium on Friday, June 26 at 6 p.m.

To apply for credentials to attend WPFG events, please fill out the online form at https://wpfg15.fusesport.com/registration/232/wpfgwebsite/. Media/press accreditations may be picked up at the Off-Site Accreditation & Registration Center, which is located at 1800 Cameron Glen Dr., Reston, Va., starting Mon., June 22 through the end of the Games on Sun., July 5. KEY EVENTS:

The World Police & Fire Games consist of more than 60 competitive activities, including both traditional sports and events specific to the first responder community. Following are a few events that may be of particular interest to the media:
 
-- Opening Ceremony, June 26 at 6 p.m., RFK Stadium. This event will feature the Parade of Athletes, the Lighting of the Cauldron, and performances by Madison Rising and Sugar Ray. Among the speakers on hand will be General Colin Powell. A First Responder Fan Fest will take place prior to the Opening Ceremony on the Armory Mall from 3:00pm – 6:00pm.
 
-- Police Service Dogs competition on June 27 at Lake Fairfax Park. The event examines service dogs’ skills rating them on obedience, agility, search and protection.
 
-- Stair Race on June 27 at Tysons Tower. Competing firefighters in full structural gear - boots, pants, coat and liner, helmet, gloves and breathing equipment race up 28 flights of stairs.
 
-- Track and Field at George Mason Stadium from June 29 through July 4. One of 13 different events taking place at GMU.
 
-- Hockey, June 27 to July 3 at three separate venues. This is one of the largest and most popular events of the Games.
 
-- Muster competition, July 4 at Fairfax City Fire Station 3. This event features a hose cart pull and bucket brigade.
 
-- Ultimate Firefighter taking place July 1 – 3 at Springfield Town Center. Wearing "full bunker gear" breathing apparatus, pairs of competitors race head-to-head as they simulate the physical demands of real-life firefighting by performing a linked series of five tasks including climbing the 5-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and rescuing a life-sized, 175 lb. "victim" as they race against themselves, their opponent and the clock.
