California Public Utilities Commission Approves California American Water Acquisition of Ox Bow Marina Mutual Water Company

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--()--In a regularly scheduled meeting today, the California Public Utilities Commission approved California American Water’s request to acquire the Ox Bow Marina Mutual Water Company with a financial close expected in early 2016. Ox Bow Marina Mutual Water Company, a water system located one mile from California American Water’s Isleton system near Sacramento, provides water and waste water services to 97 connections through wells, mains, distribution lines and other facilities.

Ox Bow Marina, a large deluxe marina with boat slips and waterfront homes, is located on Georgiana Slough, which is a scenic waterway connecting the Sacramento River to the Mokelumne River near Walnut Grove and Highway 12. Maintaining drinking water to state and federal standards had placed Ox Bow under a requirement to upgrade its antiquated water system.

"It is with great pleasure that we have been able to work with California American Water to accomplish this by a future planned pipeline connection to their excellent water filtration plant in Isleton," said Kimberly Korth, president of the Ox Bow Marina Mutual Water Company and Co-owner of Ox Bow Marina.

Ox Bow’s water supply currently exceeds state and federal maximum contaminate levels for arsenic. California American Water, Ox Bow, and the California State Water Resources Control Board Division of Financial Assistance (DFA) are working together to complete grant-funded improvements that will tie the Ox Bow water system to California American Water’s Isleton system. Once the systems are consolidated, water treated at California American Water’s Isleton arsenic treatment plant will become Ox Bow’s new potable source.

“I am pleased to welcome Oxbow customers and am eager to meet them and introduce them to our conservation programs including rebates and free services and devices. This is truly a win-win as the new customers will enjoy improved water quality once a pipeline is built and the transaction closes. They will also enjoy access to our low income discount program and conservation tools to deal with the drought,” said Director of Northern California Operations S. Audie Foster. “Through this acquisition, we will be able to treat and provide customers with safe and reliable water services at a reasonable rate.”

California American Water, a subsidiary of American Water (NYSE: AWK), provides high quality and reliable water and/or wastewater service to approximately 600,000 people.

Founded in 1886, American Water is the largest and most geographically diverse publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company. With headquarters in Voorhees, N.J., the company employs 6,400 dedicated professionals who provide regulated and market-based drinking water, wastewater and other related services to an estimated 15 million people in 47 states and Ontario, Canada.
