LA County Loses Another Round in Court to AHF

LOS ANGELES--()--AIDS Healthcare Foundation President Michael Weinstein issued the following statement today in response to Los Angeles County losing its legal challenge to force AHF, a long-standing not-for profit entity, to pay property taxes:

“In an ongoing campaign of harassment against AHF, LA County challenged AHF’s exemption from property taxes that it is entitled to as a nonprofit, charitable organization and lost. A Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled that AHF is entitled to full exemption for the properties at issue in the lawsuit filed against the County. AHF has owned property in LA County since 1992 and never before has the foundation been charged any property taxes. However, after AHF's criticism of corruption in the County intensified, the County has sought every means to retaliate against the foundation. AHF has successfully challenged the County in Court and won…once again.”

The Los Angeles County Superior Court granted AHF’s motion for summary judgment in Case Number BC544498, AIDS Healthcare Foundation vs. County of Los Angeles, and determined that the organization’s Carl Bean House and Linn House, former AIDS hospices now being used for medical clinics and the operation of low-income HIV health plans, meet qualifications for nonprofit property tax exemptions. The Court ordered the County to refund money AHF has previously paid.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the largest global AIDS organization, currently provides medical care and/or services to over 430,000 individuals in 36 countries worldwide in the US, Africa, Latin America/Caribbean, the Asia/Pacific Region and Eastern Europe.
