Imaging and Applied Optics Congress 2015 to Feature Innovative Advancements in Applied Optics

Nobel Laureates, John Mather and W.E. Moerner, to Discuss Modern Space Exploration and Super-Resolution Microscopy during Plenary Programs

WASHINGTON--()--Applied optical technologies enhance product offerings and help expand the market reach of organizations in very diverse segments of global commerce, with applications in environmental, defense, oil and gas, food and beverage, medical and pharmaceutical sectors. This year’s Imaging and Applied Optics Conference (AIO) brings together optics researchers from public and private entities with experience in overcoming the challenges of deploying and commercializing new technologies. Programming topics will include instrumentation, metrology, imaging systems, applied spectroscopy, clinical diagnostics, harsh environment systems, emerging laser and photonic technologies.

“During my presentation at Imaging and Applied Optics, I will outline the mission design of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), planned for launch in October 2018,” said Dr. John Mather, 2006 Nobel Prize Winner in Physics and senior astrophysicist, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, USA. “The JWST utilizes high performance imaging optics to see beyond what the great Hubble Space Telescope can see, farther away and farther back in time.”

Detailing his presentation, Dr. W.E. Moerner, 2014 Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry and professor at Stanford University, California, USA, said, "My presentation will explain how light paves the way to single-molecule detection and photo control, critical elements for surpassing the optical diffraction limit. Super-resolution microscopy has led to a greater understanding of structures in cells and provides an exciting opportunity to observe molecules and their interactions in 3D with a degree of clarity never thought possible.”
