The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company Announces the Recipient of its Inaugural Life of Significance Award

Company honors Midshipman First Class David Schroeder of the US Naval Academy

HORSHAM, Pa.--()--During the 2015 Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship on May 30-31, The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company (Penn Mutual) honored Midshipman First Class David Schroeder of the US Naval Academy with the Penn Mutual Life of Significance Award. The award will be given annually to a collegiate rugby player participating in the CRC. The recipient exemplifies Penn Mutual’s values of integrity, commitment and respect, and has made substantial contributions to society and their community.

Schroeder, who was nominated by his coach, Major J.V. McCarthy, was recently commissioned as a second lieutenant in the US Marine Corps. Prior to his appointment, Schroeder enlisted in the Marine Corps out of high school and was quickly promoted twice during his enlistment – achieving the rank of Sergeant and qualifying as loadmaster instructor. His deployment tours have included Japan and Afghanistan.

A leader on the Naval Academy’s rugby pitch, Schroeder’s work ethic is contagious among his teammates. Off the rugby pitch, he is working toward an Oceanography degree, is the flag bearer of the Academy’s Color Guard detachment, and regularly mentors an eighth grade youth group with his community church.

“David is someone who looks out for the welfare of others and leads them with his actions. He is a competitor on the pitch, in the classroom and in the community,” said J.V. McCarthy. “His sense of loyalty, commitment and integrity are defining of his character, and his values are in sync with what the Life of Significance Award stands for.”

“All of us at Penn Mutual are extremely proud that David is the first to be honored with the Penn Mutual Life of Significance Award,” said Eileen McDonnell, Chairman, President & CEO. “His achievements and contributions are certainly worthy of this award, and we all wish him continued success as he makes a lasting impact on those he touches.”

The Penn Mutual Life of Significance Award is inspired by the book authored by Joseph Jordan, “Living a Life of Significance,” which focuses on the positive impact the life insurance industry has on society.

Upon winning the award, a $5,000 contribution will be made to the charity of Schroeder’s choice, and the Naval Academy’s rugby team will receive $1,000 in Rhino rugby gear for their team’s equipment needs.
