FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fairfax County businesses dominate a new Washington Business Journal list of largest veteran-owned companies in the Washington region, with the top five businesses, eight of the top 10 and 16 of the top 25 based in the county.
The list in the May 22-28 Business Journal ranks the largest veteran-owned companies by 2014 revenue. Reston-based ThunderCat Technology had the top spot. Tysons Corner-based MicroTech, Falls Church-based Three Wire Systems, Reston-based Knight Point Systems and Tysons Corner-based E3 Federal Solutions rounded out the top five on the list. More than 12,000 veteran-owned businesses have a presence in Fairfax County, and they employ more than 26,000 workers, according to the 2007 Economic Census produced by the U.S. Census Bureau.
More than a third of the veteran-owned firms in Fairfax County are in professional, scientific and technical sectors, and almost 43 percent of jobs in veteran-owned businesses are in those sectors, according to the Economic Census. More than 80,000 military veterans live in Fairfax County, about 9 percent of the adult population, according to the 2013 American Community Survey released by the Census Bureau.
Support for businesses owned by veterans is strong in the county. The Springfield-based Community Business Partnership (CBP) recently won a U.S. Small Business Administration grant to establish a Veterans Business Outreach Center, one of 14 in the nation, and CBP annually presents a Veterans in Business Conference. The Fairfax County-based SkillSource Group offers business development assistance and job placement services through its Northern Virginia Jobs 4 Veterans program.
Time magazine called Fairfax County “one of the great economic success stories of our time.” Fairfax County offers businesses a state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure, access to global markets through Washington Dulles International Airport, a vibrant investment capital community and a highly skilled, well-educated workforce.
