Airfares for Domestic Destinations Hold as Fares to Europe Increase for Memorial Day Weekend

Comparison of 2015 to 2014 Show Hawaii and Munich with Largest Drop

ARLINGTON, Va.--()--Airlines Reporting Corp. (ARC) announced today that after researching more than 530,000 airline tickets purchased for travel over the Memorial Day weekend, ticket prices paid, compared to 2014, ranged from flat for flights to U.S. domestic destinations to an overall increase in ticket prices for flights to Europe from the U.S.

Looking at all tickets purchased through April, U.S. domestic fares were almost exactly the same in 2015 as they were in 2014 with an average of $406. Fares to European destinations from the U.S. rose 2.4 percent, averaging $1,713 this year vs. $1,673 in 2014.

After analyzing the 30 top domestic and European destinations by ticket volume, ARC found the greatest fare drops from 2014 in each category were Maui (Kahului), Hawaii (-11.39 percent) and Munich (-20.6 percent). The highest fare increases in the domestic and European categories were Denver (+15.67 percent) and Stockholm (+24 percent).

"U.S. domestic average ticket prices are continuing to remain steady, however, we are seeing some fluctuation of fares to Europe,” said Chuck Thackston, managing director of enterprise information management at ARC. “For example, our data shows a slight increase over the Memorial Day weekend despite a continued increase in the number of available seats. While there has been some weakening of the U.S. dollar vs. the euro in April, Europe still remains a good travel bargain and the demand for seats over the holiday weekend seems to be driving up average ticket prices.”
