TEL AVIV, Israel--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Netafim, the global leader in irrigation, announced today that it has won a $10 million follow-up contract to supply an end-to-end drip irrigation solution for Senegal Sugar Company (CSS), one of Africa’s largest sugarcane producers. The comprehensive, large-scale river-to-plantation system covers 1,450 hectares in northern Senegal. Part of a multi-phased project, the innovative drip solution strengthens Netafim’s presence in the African sugarcane sector, while enabling CSS to continue expanding production and generating significantly higher yields.
Owned by the multinational Mimran Group, CSS – Senegal’s largest private-sector employer – started growing sugarcane over 40 years ago. Producing over 1.3 million tons of sugarcane annually, the company initially adopted drip irrigation technology in 2005 in order to expand production to the region’s desert areas. In 2011, Netafim won an initial $11 million contract with CSS as sole designer and supplier of a comprehensive drip solution, including infrastructure, covering 1,150 hectares. Marking its first independently developed end-to-end sugarcane solution, Netafim completed the complex project in just one year. Since implementation, the sustainable solution has increased yields to 180-200 tons/hectare compared to 120 tons/hectare, while reducing water, nutrient and chemicals, energy and labor costs.
In light of the project’s success, CSS chose Netafim to expand the solution across an additional 1,450 hectares in 2015-2016 by leveraging current infrastructure. The infrastructure includes a primary pump station, two reservoirs, four secondary pump stations, and a network of flexible water distribution pipes. Transmitting operational instructions by radio between the back office and the field, the fully automated river-to-plantation solution is the most innovative of its kind in the region.
“Netafim’s high level of professionalism and expertise in the project’s previous phase made it easy for us to decide to continue working with them,” said André Froissard, CSS General Manager. “Netafim not only succeeded in rapidly setting up the complex solution, but also provided us with the outstanding agronomic and technical support from day one, including frequently visiting our site and training our personnel. And when it comes to increasing yields and lowering costs, the solution has more than met our expectations.”
“Winning the next phase of the CSS contract enables us to further penetrate the large and fast-growing African sugarcane market,” said Ran Maidan, Netafim CEO. “We’re pleased with the success we’ve had in the project until now, particularly providing an end-to-end solution that included complex infrastructure. We look forward to partnering with CSS yet again, as we continue to develop smart irrigation solutions for diverse crops, including basic crops like sugarcane, to fight scarcity of food, water and land.”
Senegal Sugarcane Company (CSS) is one of the leading sugarcane producers in Africa. Located in northern Senegal, the company grows 10,000ha of sugarcane, producing over 1.3 million tons annually. The cane is then transported to CSS’s processing plant in Richard Toll, where it is manufactured into sugar. The company recently embarked on a €120 million investment program to increase annual production capacity in order to become self-sufficient and strengthen its leadership position in West Africa’s sugarcane market. With some 6,000 employees, CSS is Senegal’s largest private employer.
