AHF: Head of Rwanda HIV/AIDS Programs Applauds Gasabo Clinic Expansion

GASABO, Rwanda--()--AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) held a grand opening ceremony on April 16th for its newly expanded Kabuye Health Centre’s HIV Clinic and Laboratory in Gasabo, located in the Kigali Province. Originally operating from a single room located in a health facility built in 1940, the enlarged clinic will now include a pharmacy, laboratory, large triage area, and multiple treatment rooms to support the 700 clients who have come to depend on the clinic. The new clinic and laboratory will significantly increase access and the quality of HIV services for the people of Gasabo, the most populous district in Rwanda.

In a colorful event attended by over 100 people, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, the Head of HIV/AIDS Programs in Rwanda, applauded AHF for its contributions to fighting the country’s HIV epidemic through testing and treatment. “It is through partnerships with organizations like AHF that the government of Rwanda has been able to record a 50% decline in HIV infections and reduced HIV-related deaths by 71%,” he explained. Nsanzimana also praised AHF’s approach of working through government systems and strengthening the capacity of health workers by paying a living wage and providing needed medical equipment.

During the ceremony AHF Africa Bureau Chief Dr. Penninah Iutung and AHF Board Members Diana Hoozurk and Dr. Rodney Wright re-affirmed the organization’s commitment to support Rwanda by providing cutting-edge medicine and advocacy in the country. AHF’s 20x20 international campaign has set a goal to have 20 million people living with AIDS around the world on medical treatment by the year 2020 and the people of Rwanda can look forward to the future with an even greater sense of optimism and self-belief.
