Cashmans to Be Honored By JDRF at 33rd Annual Boston Gala

Recognition at One Night for 14 year commitment to finding a cure for type 1 diabetes (T1D)

CHELSEA, Mass.--()--Metro Credit Union, the largest state-chartered credit union in Massachusetts, announced that Robert and Shari Cashman will be honorees at the JDRF New England Chapter’s 33rd Annual Boston Gala on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at the Boston Marriott Copley Place.

JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and formerly known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The goal of the black tie event is to raise more than $1.5 million to fund research to turn Type One into Type None.

Robert and Shari Cashman became involved with JDRF after their daughter, Alyssa, was diagnosed with T1D in 2001. For the past fourteen years they have both served on the board of directors, have chaired the annual walk and the gala fundraisers, worked on the event committees and have shared their voices as advocates to assure the US Government is focusing dollars to research. Each year Alyssa’s All-Stars walk team raises funding necessary to help advance treatment options and find a cure. To date, Alyssa’s All-Stars alone has raised over $500,000.

“We have been working to find a cure for 14 years and our support of JDRF remains steadfast,” said Robert Cashman, President and CEO of Metro Credit Union. “Alyssa motivates us every day to keep working until we eradicate T1D. Our efforts focus in support of the millions like Alyssa who do not have a choice and continue to live with T1D in their daily lives.”

The Nancy Jones Diabetes Champions Award will be given to Marshalls for their commitment to JDRF. For the past 21 years, Marshalls has supported JDRF through an annual in-store fundraiser, donations from the TJX Foundation and store support of local JDRF chapters. These combined efforts have resulted in the donation of more than $25 million to JDRF, supporting their imperative mission to find a cure for diabetes.

The 2015 Boston Gala will also feature a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception, seated dinner, live and silent auctions, a Fund A Cure auction in which donations are made directly to fund T1D research, and dancing to the sounds of One Step Ahead. This year’s One Night event will also feature a special performance by Tony Award Winner and two-time Grammy Award Winner, the original star of Dreamgirls, Jennifer Holliday.
