LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Global visual technology company RealD Inc. (NYSE: RLD) and Cinemark Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: CNK), a leading motion picture exhibitor, announced today that the companies will work together to install RealD’s new PLF focused GS Cinema System in 20 Cinemark XD auditoriums across the United States and Latin America. Installations will be a mix of upgrades to existing XD auditoriums and new builds and have already begun with the Cinemark 18 + XD in Los Angeles with additional installations to be completed over approximately 24 months.
“The GS Cinema System is designed to work with today’s state-of-the-art digital cinema projection, both laser and Xenon based, to optimize the 2D and 3D visual experience in today’s Premium Large Format auditoriums,” said Anthony Marcoly, President, Worldwide Cinema at RealD. “Cinemark’s XD auditoriums are widely regarded as providing exceptional technological performance and consistently deliver attendance and per screen box office to match or surpass any large screen installation. We look forward to continuing our long-term relationship with Cinemark as we introduce the GS Cinema System and further enhance their customers’ movie-going experience.”
“In 2009, Cinemark introduced our Premium Large Screen Format brand, Cinemark XD, to the industry using RealD technology to deliver the best and brightest 3D experience to our customers throughout the world,” stated Tim Warner, Cinemark’s Chief Executive Officer. “Today, Cinemark XD is the number one private label PLF in the world with 179 screens throughout the U.S. and South and Central America as of December 31, 2014. RealD’s GS Cinema System projection technology, combined with BARCO’s Auro sound systems, will enable Cinemark to continue to lead the industry in delivering an outstanding visual experience to our customers.”
The RealD GS Cinema System is a new PLF projection technology designed to work with the new generation of laser projection as well as single or dual Xenon lamp based digital cinema projectors. Consisting of a dual wide throw-ratio lens assembly for a single projector arrangement or pair of wide throw-ratio lenses for dual projector set-ups, and integrated RealD 3D light recycling technology, the GS Cinema System is designed to deliver the industry’s brightest ultra-crisp 4K 2D and 3D images on PLF screens that may surpass 100 feet in width with a throw ratio of 0.8-1.0. The high efficiency RealD GS Cinema System is high frame rate compatible and continues the RealD tradition of easy set up and high reliability.
The world’s most widely used 3D cinema technology, RealD 3D is installed in more than 26,500 auditoriums by approximately 1,200 exhibitors in 72 countries around the world.
