BERLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Insulin Angel, the world’s smartest medication tracker that monitors your medication’s temperature and notifies you if you forget it, has launched on crowdfunding platform Indiegogo. The small device is kept with any medication or medical device, and connects to the dedicated Android or iOS smartphone app to notify you before it reaches a critical temperature – or if you leave it behind:
It will be the first device of its kind to have a remote warning capability - and invaluable for parents or carers of the young or elderly, who provide medical care from a distance. The Insulin Angel team are hoping to raise $55,000 on Indiegogo, with Pioneer pledges including shipping starting at $40. Dr. Philip Unwin of The Hart Surgery explains: "this will be such a breakthrough. Reducing the anxiety of living with medical conditions is just as important for me in my job as the condition itself."
Insulin Angel’s smart features help keep medication at its recommended temperature and reduce missed doses and forgotten equipment, which can add to the stresses of those living with diabetes and can in extreme cases prove fatal. There are 3.2 million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK; and 29.1 million Americans - or 9.3%. Of these about 10% permanently and critically require insulin. 96% of children with diabetes (under the age of 19) have type 1 - all require multiple insulin injections on a daily basis.
The total cost of diabetes in the US is estimated to be $245 billion1. Those with type 1 diabetes and some with type 2, who constantly rely on carefully balanced insulin doses throughout the day, need to ensure their medication is looked after. As insulin needs to be stored within a specific temperature range, uncertainty over the integrity of the expensive medicine can result in it being thrown away.
Insulin Angel also sets out to reduce any incidences of forgotten insulin doses with its proximity tracking functions. With a recent2 study highlighting that more than one in three patients miss insulin doses, the Insulin Angel app notifies you - or remotely to a parent or carer - if you leave the house, school or office without your medication in true IoT (Internet of Things) style.
Available on both Android and iOS, the app’s context algorithms recognize if you are around home or work, meaning you will not receive false notifications if you are in a “safe” area, such as your home, school or workplace - for example if you are in the garden and your medication is somewhere indoors.
You can back Insulin Angel on Indiegogo, starting at $40, to be delivered in July 2015.
