JAMA Viewpoint Outlines the Vision of Newly Formed IHI Leadership Alliance

Urges industry to dynamically partner with patients, workforces, and communities to deliver on the full promise of the Triple Aim

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--()--The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has set the stage, and now a group of health care leaders is calling on everyone at the helm of health care delivery to quicken the pace of change, by focusing more on proactively delivering what’s needed from the “inside out” rather than reactively responding to changes driven from the “outside in.” Drawing on the thinking and vision of the newly formed IHI Leadership Alliance, IHI President Emeritus and Senior Fellow, Don Berwick, IHI EVP Derek Feeley, and IHI Executive Director Saranya Loehrer have laid out a path forward in a new Online First Viewpoint published by JAMA. In the piece they describe a set of emerging care design principles to usher in unprecedented performance, driven less by laws, regulations, and payment changes and more by innovations and true collaborations with patients, workforces, and communities.

The care design principles include a rebalancing of power that emboldens patients, families, and communities to become active partners in co-producing health and well-being; unwavering commitment to actions and values that create pride and joy in health and health care workers; reduction of waste at every opportunity while ensuring the best care experience for patients, providers, and staff; and funneling savings brought about by improvements in health care to public and private initiatives within the communities served.

The authors note that simultaneously delivering better care and better health at lower per capita costs cannot be done without the courage and commitment of leaders in health care. Leaders must ensure their organizations are able to adapt promising practices and innovations to local contexts, engage in authentic dialogue with policy makers and civic leaders, and garner greater trust from the public.

As they move forward, Alliance members are committed to acting, not waiting; to leading, not following; to working together and in concert with their communities to deliver on the full promise of the Triple Aim; and to sharing their progress, learnings, and insights along the way. The Alliance welcomes new member organizations and leaders.
