BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dennis R. Bullock, Dean of Students at Providence High School in Burbank, today announced his candidacy for the 43rd District California State Assembly seat in the 2016 election. The seat, currently held by Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D), will be open due to term limits.
Bullock, a graduate of USC and Claremont Graduate University, was born in Burbank. He grew up and attended St. Casimir Elementary and Providence High School, both in the 43rd District and has lived in Burbank since 1999.
Bullock believes the 43rd District, encompassing Burbank, Glendale, La Crescenta, La Cañada-Flintridge, Montrose, Atwater Village, East Hollywood, Los Feliz and Silver Lake, is perhaps the most vibrant area in all of California. “This area has many strengths; chief among them is its diversity. People of myriad cultures, creeds and nationalities live together and thrive here. This is a wonderful place to live and raise a family,” said Bullock.
A 5th generation Californian, Bullock cites his own family as an example of that diversity. While Bullock’s heritage is decidedly a mix of various northern European nationalities, his wife, Mary, is Armenian-American. Her parents emigrated to the U.S. in the 1960s from Bulgaria via Lebanon.
According to Bullock, the diversity within his own family, “is reflective of our community as a whole. There are so many stories such as ours. It is the essence of where we live.”
On his website, votebullock.com, Bullock fleshes out his overarching policy philosophy. His campaign theme, Water and the Four Big E’s, defines his stance on water and economic policy, education, energy and the environment. Bullock also offers some particularly innovative policy prescriptions on education funding and water policy.
Bullock’s immediate objective, however, is to introduce himself to the community. He will be reaching out to various organizations, not just to speak, but to listen. “I want to hear what the people of the community believe are the issues, beyond what I’ve identified,” said Bullock. “I want the community’s many different perspectives to help shape my agenda.”
Together, Dennis and Mary Bullock have two children, ages 10 and 6, who both attend Burbank public schools. The open primary for this election will be June 7th, 2016; the election will be November 8th, 2016.
