Jostens Replaces Multiple Tools With AppDynamics Application Performance Monitoring to Ensure Uninterrupted Business Operations

AppDynamics chosen following a five-week, head-to-head shootout

SAN FRANCISCO--()--Jostens, one of the world’s leading providers of yearbooks, class rings, graduation materials, and championship rings, has selected the AppDynamics Application Intelligence Platform to ensure performance of its mission-critical applications and websites. With real-time visibility into application performance, Jostens is able to ensure that its manufacturing plants can meet their deadlines without incurring costly overtime charges. Because so much of its product line is focused on graduation, the timing of orders and production is critical, and that timing depends on the performance of the company’s many applications.

AppDynamics enables Jostens to quickly identify and drill down to the root cause of application issues and facilitate a quick resolution. Previously, Jostens depended on a patchwork of standard monitoring tools associated with each of its infrastructure components — database, network storage, traffic, security and event monitoring. Information from each of the tools would have to be pieced together to discover the root cause of an issue, which involved multiple teams and could take days or weeks, or sometimes could not be found. All that changed when Jostens deployed AppDynamics application performance monitoring, or APM.

“In the three years I’ve had this job, there are several issues we’ve never been able to resolve,” says Theresa Chasar, senior director of IT infrastructure, operations, and service. “With AppDynamics, we fixed them in two hours.”

Jostens’ criteria for an application performance monitoring solution included ease of adoption and ongoing use for both junior staff and IT veterans; trusted, high quality data; and return on investment value. The selection team narrowed their options down to AppDynamics and one other competitor, and put those companies through a five-week head-to-head evaluation. Following the evaluation, Jostens chose AppDynamics over the other competitor.

“When I heard what AppDynamics could do, I said it was too good to be true,” Chasar says. “I didn’t believe there could be that kind of magic out there. However, the head-to-head comparison proved that AppDynamics was easier to use, determined the root cause of performance issues faster, and consolidated our toolset.”

Jostens’ ecosystem includes a number of custom Java applications, a .NET service that handles billions of photos for 20,000 school yearbooks each year, e-commerce sites, production sites, and Oracle SQL databases. Application performance is absolutely critical, because glitches at any step of the process — when students are trying to upload yearbook files, for example — cascade through to production plant schedules, and can have severe financial consequences.

“If we suddenly start three shifts and run production on weekends, wages increase to time-and-a-half and double-time,” Chasar says. “The additional cost can total millions of dollars if we don’t keep the site available and performing at a high level.”

Jostens has deployed the AppDynamics APM solution for Java, and plans to add PHP, .NET, and database monitoring in the near term.

“Jostens is a company that’s more than one hundred years old, but their business now depends on software every step of the way,” says Jyoti Bansal, AppDynamics’ founder and CEO. “And they clearly demonstrate the limitations of a fragmented approach to monitoring all of those applications and the infrastructure that supports them. It is critical to have end-to-end visibility to quickly find any issue and fix it, and that’s a huge value that we’ve brought to the table for Jostens. We’re proud to be chosen as their application performance partner.”

Jostens’ Theresa Chasar will present a webinar, “Jostens’ APM Best Practices for Exceptional Customer Experience,” on Thursday, April 2nd, at 10:00 a.m. U.S. Pacific Time. Register now to learn first-hand the difference modern APM with a focus on business transactions can make on operations, application performance, and customer experience.
