WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) is proud to announce Congressman John Lewis, U.S. Representative of Georgia and celebrated civil rights leader, as the recipient of the 2015 “American Icon Award.” The honor is presented to a national figure who has devoted their life and career toward advancing the social, economic, and political pursuits of all Americans, and whose leadership has inspired others to become agents of change and progress. Congressman Lewis will receive the award during the Legislative Summit Gala on March 26th at the Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C.
“The USHCC is proud to recognize Congressman John Lewis with our American Icon Award. While our association’s primary focus is the economic development of America’s small and minority owned businesses, Congressman Lewis’s seminal work within the civil rights movement has inspired an entire generation of leaders, including the founders of the USHCC,” said USHCC President & CEO Javier Palomarez. “The pages of history are filled with individuals of outstanding valor and vision, but the character and convictions of Congressman Lewis have changed our country’s course forever. We look forward to honoring Congressman Lewis’s achievements during our Legislative Summit, and through our daily work promoting equality and diversity for all business communities.”
Congressman John Lewis is a lifelong civil rights activist, recognized today as one of the “Big Six” leaders of the movement. Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr., Lewis became a Freedom Rider, a keynote speaker of the March on Washington in 1963, and helped lead the historic march from Selma to Montgomery on March 7, 1965. Congressman Lewis has served as the U.S. Representative from Georgia’s 5th congressional district since 1987, and is now Senior Chief Deputy Whip for the Democratic Party. In 2011, Congressman Lewis was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.
The Legislative Summit Gala marks the finale of a three-day engagement between members within the highest pillars of government and business -- all culminating with closing remarks by honorary guest speakers and USHCC leadership. The Summit will host over 800 Hispanic business, corporate and executive leaders, and will recast the association's vision for America's business future.
