JUNEAU, Alaska--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Alaska Power & Telephone (AP&T) is pleased to announce plans for the 2015 expansion of data bandwidth capacity in the Upper Lynn Canal (ULC) region of Alaska via placement of new fiber optic undersea cable facilities in Southeast Alaska. The planned 86 mile cable-route will originate in Skagway, landing in the community of Haines before terminating at Lena Point near Juneau, Alaska.
AP&T’s Chief Operating Officer Michael Garrett stated: “The Lynn Canal Fiber project offers us the unique regional opportunity to advance the goals of both the State of Alaska as they relate to Higher Speed Broadband services, the Yukon Territory’s growing need for additional data transport capacity; while providing our own broadband subscribers a robust internet experience year-round.”
In tandem with AP&T’s 300+ mile terrestrial Southeast Alaska Microwave Network, the new undersea fiber route will exponentially expand AP&T’s bandwidth assets and positioning as a strategic partner in the rapidly expanding Alaska data transport and wireless markets segments.
The project is presently in the permitting phase with a bathymetric survey of the planned marine cable route to be completed this spring. (See project map.)
