Ultra-Broadband Wireless Enabled by Siklu and Sckipio

Millimeter-Wave Leader Partners with G.fast Leader to Bring Ultra-Broadband to Urban Broadband Users

Mobile World Congress 2015

BARCELONA, Spain--()--Siklu, the leading millimeter-wave company, and Sckipio Technologies, the leader in G.fast, have partnered to enable affordable ultra-broadband to consumers living in dense, city environments. The partnership enables wireless ISPs to deliver up to 2Gbps communications as far as 2.5 miles using E-Band and V-Band millimeter wave wireless technology connected to G.fast distribution points. The G.fast DPUs deliver up to 1Gbps of ultra-broadband over existing copper wires to residents in apartment buildings and other multi-tenant environments.

“This is a very interesting idea,” said Mark Lowenstein, Managing Director of Mobile Ecosystem, a leading mobile consultancy. “Fiber backhauling in urban settings is very difficult and expensive. Combining it with G.fast creates real opportunities for wireless ISPs to deliver higher capacity for small cells, public Wi-Fi and affordable ultra-broadband.”

E-Band and V-Band millimeter wave technology from Siklu provide up to 2 gigabits per second of aggregated traffic as far as 2.5 miles using spectrum between 60-80Ghz.

G.fast is the new ITU standard for ultra-broadband access designed to deliver up to 1Gbps over existing copper wires. This technology was specifically designed for multi-dwelling unit environments, which represents about 30% of broadband subscribers in the U.S. and even more globally.

“In cities such as San Francisco and New York, it is very challenging to trench fiber to the building and its impractical to install fiber all the way to each residence,” said Itzik Ben-Bassat, CEO of Siklu. “By combining these two emerging technologies together, we can solve many of the major logistical, regulatory, and installation problems that make it expensive to deliver gigabit broadband to city-dwellers.”

The architecture consists of an E-Band antenna at the telephone central office connected wirelessly to an E-Band antenna on the top of a residential or office building. Then, via GPON, GigE or other wired connectivity, traffic is delivered to a G.fast distribution point in the wiring closet in the building that connects to 16 individual copper pairs that flow to customer residences. Inside the apartment, condo, or office, a simple G.fast modem or residential gateway is used to receive the ultra-broadband traffic.

“Siklu lowers the costs to deliver ultra-broadband to the building, and Sckipio’s G.fast lowers the cost to deliver ultra-broadband to users within the building,” said David Baum, CEO of Sckipio. “Combining these two market disrupters will create many new opportunities for entrepreneurs who want to deliver innovative broadband solutions to millions of consumers and business customers.
