CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fitch Ratings has published a 'Dashboard' special report on Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) Health Insurers. This dashboard provides a high level overview of BCBS health insurers' common credit strengths and weaknesses and includes comparisons of key financial metrics to those of other groups of health insurers.
The report also includes a snapshot of the BCBS Companies' key financial performance metrics through the first nine months of 2014. Enrollment and revenues grew significantly during this time but these favourable aspects were more than offset from an earnings perspective by general and administrative expenses. Fitch believes that these trends are principally due to growth initiatives and related expenses tied to the roll-out of health insurance exchanges required by the Affordable Care Act's implementation.
Fitch's BCBS Health Insurers' dashboard also includes a description of market position designations commonly achieved by BCBS companies and the characteristics underlying these designations. Market position and size/scale characteristics are key factors in Fitch's ratings assessments of health insurers.
