NEOS Completes Precambrian Rift neoSCAN Study in Eastern United States

Interprets Existing Multi-Physics Data to Identify Potential Oil & Gas Exploration Leads

HOUSTON--()--NEOS GeoSolutions, Inc. today announced that it has completed a regional neoSCAN™ survey over a 360,000 mi2 area of investigation spanning multiple states in the eastern U.S. The particular focus area targeted several Precambrian rift basins which formed roughly 1.5 billion years ago beneath a multi-state area running from Ohio and West Virginia southwest to Arkansas.

The rift basins filled with nearly 20,000 feet of clastic sediment in places and were later subjected to significant erosional and tectonic forces. This neoSCAN targeted several contiguous rifts with a combined areal extent of 50,000 mi2 that some explorationists believe could be prospective for oil & gas and minerals.

As part of this project, NEOS integrated and simultaneously interpreted several existing geological and geophysical datasets to map regional geology in the area of investigation, with a particular focus on hydrocarbon exploration. The legacy geo-datasets that NEOS analyzed included non-seismic measurements (e.g., gravity, magnetic, and radiometric) as well as sub-sets of available well and seismic information.

Chris Friedemann, Chief Commercial Officer for NEOS, commented, “In roughly 90 days, we were able to identify some of the key structural features that affect hydrocarbon prospectivity in the study area, including sediment thickness and burial depths, basement topography and faulting, and the location of major lineaments and intrusive complexes. Our project sponsor was interested in assessing the exploration potential of a particular county that sits within the larger rift basin, but they felt a broader regional view would help them better understand the geologic framework in which oil & gas prospects underlying this county might have evolved. We confirmed that the geologic setting of this particular county was, in fact, attractive for potential oil & gas accumulations; however, we also identified more than a dozen additional exploration leads in the area of investigation that we thought warranted further evaluation.”
