PMI Volunteers Help Companies in Need at Inaugural Project Management Day of Service

Groundbreaking event provides pro bono project management expertise for deserving non-profit organizations

WASHINGTON--()--In a first-of-its-kind event, representatives from local chapters of Project Management Institute are participating today in Scope-A-Thon, a Project Management Day of Service that provides pro bono project management services to hundreds of non-profit and charity organizations. Working through a specially created project management office, volunteers from the five Washington, D.C. Metro Area PMI chapters (representing more than 18,000 chapter members), are managing the event in partnership with the Taproot Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that makes business talent available to organizations working to improve society.

Often faced with tight budgets and limited resources, many non-profits are in need of professional help in defining and scoping projects, project planning and overall strategy development. During the Project Management Day of Service (PMDoS), hundreds of dedicated volunteers are donating their time and specialized project management expertise to the organizations that are doing so much to improve the quality of life for individuals in and around the D.C. metro area. In each consultation session, PMI’s project management subject matter experts are meeting individually with representatives of the participating non-profit companies to review prepared “problem statements”, address potential roadblocks, and create an actionable, customized project plans that will serve as a blueprint for business sustainability.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to offer project management services directly to non-profit organizations on such an unprecedented scale,” said Laura Barnard, Executive PMO Director, PMDoS. “It’s especially fitting that this event took place on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, when many Americans are reaching out and donating their time to others in need.”

As experienced project professionals, Ms. Barnard and her colleagues have tasked themselves with dispelling the notion of the “accidental” project manager: “By making the Project Management Day of Service a reality, we hope to create a model that will help generate demand for similar outreach events around the world, and re-define project management as the ‘intentional’ profession.”
