Farmers Market Initiative Provides Free Food and Health Education to Thousands of Georgians

Amerigroup Distributes Fresh, Locally Grown Produce through Farmers Markets, Mobile Food Pantries Across Georgia

ATLANTA--()--Eating fresh food is one of the most significant factors in the health of a community, and Amerigroup Georgia has spent the fall season dispensing fresh fruit, vegetables and health advice to Georgians through its Famers Market Initiative.

From October through December, Amerigroup’s Farmers Market Initiative hosted 14 events across Georgia, distributing food to more than 1,250 people. Four farmers markets and 10 mobile food pantries connected growers to nearby communities by bringing locally grown produce to neighborhoods that have limited access to fresh food. Amerigroup also provided free health screenings, children’s activities and tips about obesity, diabetes, wellness and nutrition to event participants.

Amerigroup also extended the healthy eating message by distributing 50 baskets with fresh fruit and health information to the offices of various network providers.

”The Farmers Market Initiative was designed to promote healthy eating,” said Fran Gary, plan president, Amerigroup Georgia. “Working with local farmers to bring fresh fruits and vegetables to serve our local communities benefits everyone, and we look forward to continuing to share this message around Georgia in 2015.”

In 2015, Amerigroup will expand its initiative in metro Atlanta by funding the Grant Park Farmers Market SNAP program, which doubles the value of food stamps at this market. The $10,000 sponsorship will also fund a series of educational cooking demonstrations by local chefs to provide tools and tips for healthy living at schools and community centers in low-income areas.
