C3 Energy Shares Insight on Machine Learning for Sempra Utilities

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--()--C3 Energy Chief Data Scientist Zico Kolter described machine learning and its applications to energy systems at the Sempra Analytics Center of Excellence (ACE) quarterly meeting yesterday, which included both San Diego Gas & Electric Co. and Southern California Gas Co.

Kolter is a well-recognized authority on improving the efficiency of power generation using machine learning to advance the modern energy system. A faculty member at Carnegie Mellon, he earned his doctorate in computer science at Stanford University and conducted extensive postdoctoral research at the MIT Computer Science Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

“Machine learning refers to a large collection of data-driven modeling techniques, which can automatically capture complex business logic using historical data,” said Kolter. “Machine learning enables utilities to extract meaning from smart grid data sets much too large for manual processing. It can be used to classify assets at high risk of failure, segment customers for targeted marketing, identify non-technical loss, and predict future load, among many other use cases.”

Sempra Energy’s California utilities—San Diego Gas & Electric Co. and Southern California Gas Co.—serve more than 20 million consumers. For the Sempra ACE quarterly meeting, employees from both utilities gathered at the Downey Energy Resource Center in Downey, Calif., to hear from data analytics experts and discuss related projects and concepts on Jan. 13, 2015.
