NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Grid energy storage could see an increase in investments in 2015, according to Fitch Ratings' new Energy Storage Dashboard. A falling cost curve and technological advancements have recently generated considerable interest in the sector.
Fitch believes that transmission grid storage could reduce costs for utilities and improve reliability. However, distributed storage solutions along with rooftop solar could threaten the traditional utility model by allowing customers an option to break away from the grid. This could also be a game changer for pure play merchant generators.
Much depends on whether storage solutions will be treated as a regulated asset and when a merchant solution will become economically viable.
