Electric New York Canal Work Boat Selected as One of 10 Significant Boats of 2014

Electric Work Boat Centerpiece of New West Technologies’ Leading Edge Transportation Development Efforts

YORKVILLE, N.Y.--()--The editors of WorkBoat Magazine recently announced its selection of the 10 Significant Boats of 2014 which included the prototype all-electric dredge tender work boat that is owned and operated by the New York State Canal Corporation (NYSCC). The all-electric tender work boat was successfully designed, deployed and tested with cost-share grants jointly-funded by the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). The all-electric powertrain used in the boat was developed and installed by Elco Motor Yachts.

New West Technologies, LLC (New West) worked with NYSCC to develop the original project concept for the all-electric tender work boat, as well as two winning proposals to secure funding for the project. New West’s project responsibilities included: overall project management, third-party data acquisition and analysis, determination of all-electric and hybrid-electric powertrain options, down-selection to the selected powertrain system, performance of energy/emissions/cost analysis of the selected system, and oversight of powertrain installation.

Gregory Wilcox, P.E., Manager of New West’s Advanced Transportation Technology Division, stated that “we were pleased to partner again with our long-term client, NYSERDA, and to establish new partnerships with NYSDOT, NYSCC, and Elco Motor Yachts. The project is a great example of applying emerging, more energy efficient technology to traditional, conventionally-fueled sources to achieve significant and cost-effective air quality improvement. Technology solutions of this type support the long-term sustainability goals of the NYSCC and the State of New York. We are very gratified to have played a significant role in this successful project and to witness the accolades the all-electric work boat continues to receive from organizations such as WorkBoat Magazine.”

This year’s 10 WorkBoat Magazine winners will be recognized at a breakfast awards ceremony before the International WorkBoat Show opens in New Orleans on Thursday, December 4. In addition, a Boat of the Year will be selected from among the 10 winners.
