OLX Partners with Facebook to Offer Free Access to Online Classifieds in Emerging Markets via Internet.org

OLX is available free of data charges on the Internet.org mobile application in Tanzania and Kenya with plans to expand the partnership elsewhere

Partnership follows global online classifieds platform’s recent announcement that it surpassed 200 million active monthly users worldwide

NEW YORK & BUENOS AIRES, Argentina--()--Global online classifieds platform OLX, among the most used online platforms in the world, announced today that it has partnered with Facebook to offer access to online classifieds through the Internet.org mobile application, free of data charges, in emerging markets around the world, beginning with Tanzania and Kenya. This initiative follows OLX’s October 2014 announcement that it surpassed 200 million active monthly users worldwide. Earlier this summer, OLX also announced significant expansion into 11 new countries across Southeast Asia and Europe.

Internet.org is a global partnership with the goal of making Internet access available to billions of people around the world. Besides OLX, other services available on the Internet.org application in Tanzania and Kenya include Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Wikipedia, BBC News, and AccuWeather, among others.

“OLX’s founding mission is to introduce the benefits of online classifieds and used goods marketplaces to the emerging world,” said OLX cofounder and Americas CEO Alec Oxenford. “We are proud to work with Facebook to knock down barriers to Internet access and help bring millions of consumers in emerging markets online for the first time. Online classifieds offer new economic opportunities to users, particularly in these markets, allowing them to turn unwanted household goods into new income.”

OLX is the top online classifieds platform focused on emerging markets and is widely considered an innovator in the sector. The company was dubbed the “undisputed leader in India” and “market leader in Brazil” by Morgan Stanley in a late 2013 report. The report also noted that OLX is “rapidly pulling away from the intense competition.”
