TAMUNING, Guam--(BUSINESS WIRE)--GTA announced today it has reached an agreement to acquire 42Mhz of wireless spectrum, boosting its capacity to meet the growing demand for high-speed wireless service. This new acquisition, on the heels of a 10Mhz purchase of spectrum earlier in the year, effectively doubles GTA’s spectral holdings. After completing this new transaction, GTA will own 97Mhz of spectrum.
The company expects to close the transaction in the next few months, enabling GTA to execute a comprehensive, long-term strategy to expand and improve its service offerings. Robert Haulbrook, GTA president and CEO, said, “With customers’ data usage increasing rapidly, we wanted to make sure GTA had sufficient spectrum to accommodate the increasing demand for wireless data. ”
GTA plans to rapidly put to use the additional spectrum to increase capacity and Internet speeds on its 4G LTE network. Today, GTA has already put 10Mhz of additional spectrum to use. This has tripled the capacity of the 4G LTE network as well as immediately increase wireless internet speeds.
Haulbrook said, “Our customers will quickly notice the enhancements to our network. In addition to improving performance through additional spectrum, we intend to double the number of sites over the next year, which will increase our 4G LTE coverage to about 95% of where GTA customers live, work and play. ”
The spectrum acquisition is part of GTA’s strategy to continuously find ways to improve its network in order to meet the long-term needs of its customers. In 2014, GTA has added a total of five 3G sites and another five LTE sites with plans to add another five 3G sites and twenty LTE sites in 2015. In addition, additional investments include adding more fiber to existing sites.
GTA expects to invest more than $15 million in network upgrades by the end of 2014. That amount brings the total investment the company has invested in network enhancements since becoming privatized in 2005 to more than $125 million. GTA has plans to invest at least$15 million in network improvements for 2015.
