Komen Austin Announces Karen Shultz as Interim Executive Director

Christy Casey-Moore departs, leaving Susan G. Komen® Austin primed for growth

AUSTIN, Texas--()--Susan G. Komen® Austin is pleased to announce today that board member Karen Shultz has accepted the position of interim executive director for the non-profit. The current executive director, Christy Casey-Moore, announced that she is leaving the organization after more than 18 years with Komen Austin to take the position of VP of Client Services for Rallyhood, Inc, an Austin-based software company for cause-driven communities. Casey-Moore began working with Komen Austin as volunteer race leader and grew with the non-profit to her most recent role as executive director, which she has held for the last five years.

As interim executive director, Shultz will guide Komen Austin as it continues its mission of raising funds to provide free breast cancer screening, education and medical services, as well as financial and emotional support, for uninsured and underinsured individuals in Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis and Williamson Counties.

Shultz has a long career leading sales and marketing organizations in technology businesses. Shultz, who is currently vice president of the Komen Austin board and owner of marketing firm, Brilliant Ideas Group, is no stranger to the non-profit world. Previously she has held board positions with the Center for Child Protection, American Youthworks and Leadership Women for Leadership Texas. Most recently she held an eight-year board role, which included a two year term as board president at the Center for Child Protection of Travis County. While serving as president she successfully completed the search for and transition to the new executive director.

Shultz will take on the role of interim executive director at Komen Austin beginning December 1st, and will relinquish her board role at Komen Austin while serving in this capacity.

“It’s my honor to take on the interim executive director role for Komen Austin,” said Shultz. “Christy has been an extraordinary leader and advocate for Komen during her tenure and we wish her the very best in her new endeavors. She leaves us after recently celebrating our 16th annual Race for the Cure, where the community stepped up once again to support us in raising funds to help women right here in our community. I’m very excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for Komen Austin as we continue making an impact in this community as one of the largest funders of grants for breast health services in the Austin area.”

“The unanimous board vote for Shultz to take on this role combined with continued unwavering community support for Komen Austin leaves us in a good position to take the time needed to secure the right leader for this organization," said Jennifer Stevens, president of the board for Komen Austin. "With Karen Shultz at the helm we now have one of the most energized interim executive directors I have seen in my career, and we have a fantastic opportunity to bring in an executive director that is passionate about our mission and driven by the goal of funding breast cancer prevention, treatment and education programs for thousands of women and men in our community."
