Intelligent Hospital Systems RIVA Produces 3 Million Medication Doses Safely and Accurately

New milestone demonstrates growing recognition and benefit of IV automation in protecting patient health and safety

WINNIPEG, Manitoba--()--Intelligent Hospital Systems (IH Systems) today announced its RIVA systems have safely and accurately produced more than 3 million medication doses globally since being introduced in 2008. RIVA, a fully-automated robotic IV compounding system, prepares medications for syringes and IV bags in an aseptic environment for pediatric, general and cancer hospitals, and compounding centers.

“RIVA provides a comprehensive medication compounding solution that can meet the most demanding requirements for safety, efficiency and cost savings,” said Dr. Niels Erik Hansen, president and CEO of IH Systems. “Even with the passage of legislation in the U.S. to regulate compounding, pharmacy recalls have continued – demonstrating that regulations are no substitute for proven technology. Instead of recalls and problems, RIVA has quietly produced 3 million medication doses without error or contamination. It is clear that automation technology focused on patient safety, such as RIVA, needs to be a critical component of pharmacy practice now and in the future.”

More than 135,000 routine quality control checks across all RIVA installations have found no contamination in compounds produced by the systems. RIVA, which is USP<797>-compliant, can process individual or batch doses in an ISO Class 5 environment, and is the only system with true walk-away capability. Customer feedback indicates users continue to rate RIVA’s safety technology and IH Systems’ customer service among the best in the industry.

In July, independent healthcare research firm KLAS recognized RIVA as the category leader in “Pharmacy automation: IV robots,” following surveys and in-depth interviews with healthcare providers and administrators across the U.S. and Canada. RIVA’s overall score of 81.3 is the highest for IV robots used in pharmacy automation that were evaluated in the report.
