WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The American Cleaning Institute® (ACI) issued the following statement in response to a study published in the journal Pediatrics assessing childhood accidents involving liquid laundry packets:
Manufacturers of liquid laundry detergent packets are very committed to reducing the number of children involved in accidents with these products, which are used safely by millions of consumers.
ACI and its member companies have directly engaged parents and caregivers, as well as poison control centers, pediatricians and other medical professionals, educators and social service providers in alerting them to the potential for childhood accidents if these products are not properly stored.
In addition, manufacturers have made major changes to their packaging including the addition of easy-to-understand safety icons, improving warning labels to advise proper use and storage instructions, and changing to opaque packaging so the single dose packets are not visible from the outside.
Manufacturers of these products have been engaged with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to coordinate actions promoting reduced accidents since 2012.
In 2013, ACI and a group of liquid laundry detergent packet manufacturers launched a multi-year consumer laundry safety program – the KEY Pledge campaign – to prevent accidents by educating parents and caregivers about the safe handling of liquid laundry packets. The campaign’s laundry safety messages have reached millions of consumers through multiple outreach efforts involving retailers, mommy bloggers, safety videos and the news media.
ACI released a voluntary guidance document in early 2014 for liquid laundry detergent packet manufacturers to help reduce the likelihood of child exposure to the contents of these products.
The guidance provides best practices for the household laundry products industry in the labeling and design of packaging for liquid laundry packets. This guidance encourages that safe handling and usage information is clear and prominently placed on the label.
The American Cleaning Institute and its detergent manufacturer members are also actively engaged in an ongoing process – administered by the standard-setting group ASTM International – that’s addressing laundry packet labeling and packaging.
ACI will continue working to reach as many parents and caregivers as possible, reminding them of the importance to keep laundry packets away from children – which is true of other household cleaners as well. No matter what type of detergent a parent or caregiver uses, it should be stored out of reach and out of sight of children.
