AOL Relaunches Cambio

Samsung Signs on to “Power” New Millennial Site #BUILTBYGIRLS

NEW YORK--()--AOL today announced the relaunch of the newly envisioned Cambio, a site for girls, built by girls. The new Cambio is the product of a unique partnership with Girls Who Code, an organization working to close the gender gap in tech by teaching a million girls to code by 2020.

Earlier this year, AOL and Cambio approached Girls Who Code with an irresistible opportunity - turn Cambio into a laboratory for real girls to create a site they want to visit – one which truly reflects their interests and passions. In June, five Girls Who Code alumnae moved into AOL's offices to take up the challenge. Natasha Driver, Roxy Banik, Nikki Allen, Lily Yuan and Michelle Polton-Simon re-imagined everything about Cambio from the editorial vision to design and product. They built two unique products for the site - Celebspiration, a mobile-first product that allows girls to create personalized, shareable, inspirational celebrity memes; and Cambio COL[LAB], a contributor network that will enable girls everywhere to add content to Cambio.

"We wanted to create a place where girls can find anything about every topic they care about - because you may like video games and coding, but also fashion and celebrities," said Michelle Polton-Simon. "We also wanted to find a balance between a website that is fun and talks to young women, not down to them." Natasha Driver added, "We wanted to build something where girls can empower one another - we should be lifting one another up and motivating each other."

Nisha Dua, General Manager of Cambio noted, “What started as a summer program has blossomed into a broader initiative to inspire girls to be builders. #BUILTBYGIRLS encourages young women to claim their place in the tech-enabled economy by imagining and building the great products of the future or by tapping technology to power their work, play and passions."

Samsung supports the movement to encourage women and girls to be proficient in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) subjects through its various corporate citizenship programs. Samsung will “power” a native editorial series on the site which highlights the unique stories of the five coders and how they were motivated, inspired and mentored in the area of code. Cambio will also feature a five episode video series powered by Samsung chronicling the girls' journey this summer as they rebuilt the site.
