OVERLAND PARK, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Since the late 1970s, Multisystemic Therapy® (MST ®) has been proven to break the cycle of criminal behavior of juvenile offenders that often leads to their incarceration. The evidence-based treatment model takes a comprehensive view of youth behavior by requiring therapists to personally engage, not only with the troubled youth, but with their family, peers, school, neighborhood and community. Research has shown that outcomes are greatly improved when clinicians closely follow a detailed protocol and track their efforts and outcomes.
Now, thanks to a unique partnership between Netsmart, Community Solutions, Inc. and MST Services, clinicians will be able to integrate all required MST documentation and procedures electronically. Real-time clinical management, billing, and reporting functions have been built into an MST-specific version of Netsmart’s Electronic Health Record (CareRecord™). The electronic system will help support high levels of fidelity to the MST model. High levels of fidelity are critical to achieving positive client outcomes with evidence-based practices like MST. Netsmart is committed to finding new and innovative ways of helping clinicians provide better care delivered more easily and efficiently so clinicians can focus on what they do best rather than time consuming paper-work.
“We’re pleased to partner with MST Services to transform the way therapists use MST from a labor-intensive method to an integrated, efficient process that will let them focus on caring for kids instead of documentation,” said Netsmart CEO Mike Valentine. “There is no financial relationship involved in this agreement. It’s simply about doing what’s best for troubled youths receiving treatment.”
“MST Services is excited to be a part of this innovative partnership,” said CEO Keller Strother. “We believe that agencies using CareRecord to support their implementation of MST will be able to deliver the model more efficiently and effectively, thereby lowering costs and improving outcomes – a win for everyone involved.”
Windsor, Connecticut-based Community Solutions, Inc. (CSI), has been integral in the decision to integrate the evidence-based treatment model with Netsmart’s CareRecord™. Both an MST partner and CareRecord™ user, CSI has for many years, demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of troubled children by reducing recidivism, out-of-home placement, substance abuse and school failure.
Community Solutions, Inc.’s CEO, Bob Pidgeon, stated: experience with MST has been both productive and rewarding. MST is a program that works for families; it has significantly reduced recidivism in all of the jurisdictions where it has been implemented, and has resulted in the preservation of families, keeping a high proportion of youth in school or at work, and has been significantly less expensive than more traditional treatment methods. Moving to an automated electronic system of record keeping has allowed a more economical use of the therapist’s time, permits more direct service delivery, and provides more timely and effective use of data to assess the strength of the program.
MST is used internationally, in 14 countries including the U.S. Many states' Medicaid agencies encourage providers to use MST because it has a demonstrated record of success. “The availability of Medicaid funding for MST had allowed significantly more families to have access to treatment across the US,” noted Keller Strother, “There are numerous highly effective, state-wide MST networks available supported by Medicaid funding. CareRecord is a great resource for MST agencies that must find a way to balance the case reporting requirements of the MST model with the recordkeeping and billing demands of a Medicaid funded systems.” Research has proven the effectiveness of MST at reducing criminal behaviour in youth, leading to significant savings to tax payers and victims.
Multisystemic Therapy (MST) is an intensive family- and community-based treatment program that focuses on addressing all environmental systems that impact chronic and violent juvenile offenders. MST recognizes that each system plays a critical role in a youth's world and each system requires attention when effective change is needed to improve the quality of life for youth and their families. MST works with the toughest offenders ages 12 through 17 who have a very long history of arrests.
Gold-standard evaluations of MST research made it evident that the evidence-based therapy should be taken from academia and science journals into the real world. The overriding goal of MST, its prime directive, is to keep adolescents who have exhibited serious clinical problems—drug abuse, violence, severe emotional disturbance—at home, in school and out of trouble.
