19 Year-old Earns Guinness World Record for Youngest Solo Flight around the World, Continues Raising Awareness for Code.org

Matt Guthmiller, now a sophomore at MIT, aims for kids everywhere to learn how to write computer code

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--()--Announcing the new Guinness World Record™ holder for youngest solo pilot to circumnavigate the globe: Matthew Guthmiller, a 19 year old MIT sophomore hailing from Aberdeen, South Dakota. His record is now verified, but Matt still doesn’t consider his journey complete – he is committed to continuing to raise awareness and funds for a cause he believes in wholeheartedly: bringing computer science education to underserved students. Matt took the message of Code.org, around the world with him this summer and is continuing his efforts even now that he has returned to MIT for his sophomore year. Donations can be made at www.limitless-horizons.org.

Code.org® is a non-profit 501c3 charity dedicated to expanding participation in computer science education by making it available in more schools, and increasing participation by women and underrepresented students of color. Its vision: for every student in every school to have the opportunity to learn computer programming.

It’s a vision that resonates with Matt Guthmiller, who began writing code in the 5th grade; started one of the very first iPhone unlocking businesses in 2007; and by high school had advanced to producing algorithms that could predict crude oil prices and using supercomputers to analyze stock trades. Matt believes that everyone should have the opportunity to learn code, as it will one day become as essential as learning your ABC’s. He is living proof of the opportunities and inspiration provided by access to computer programming education.

“I’m happy to use the platform I earned through achieving the Guinness world record to further Code.org’s mission,” says Guthmiller. “It was an incredible journey – the places I visited, and the people I met there, will stay with me forever. I’d like to continue to share my story with the world, to inspire young people to reach for goals that may seem very far away.”

For more information about Matt’s adventures as he covered more than 30,000 miles while making 23 stops in 15 different countries across five continents during his month-and-a-half-long journey, please visit www.limitless-horizons.org.
