NANJING, China--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) officially ended on 28 August after a spectacular closing ceremony. International Olympic Committee(IOC) President Thomas Bach declared the Games a “perfectly flawless” event and athletes, organizers, volunteers and sports lovers said farewell after 12 days of competition, culture and education. Everyone that helped make the Nanjing 2014 YOG a success should be considered YOG champions.
As Bulgarian rhythmic gymnast Emiliya Radicheva said,“Winning gold is not everything. Winning the audience's approval is.”Radeicheva and her four teammates took silver in the group all-around final at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium on Wednesday, and she said her team won over the spectators with their carefully choreographed, creative routines. "We didn't have a goal," said Radicheva. "We competed for the applause of the people.”The many athletes who gave everything in their performances are the real champions of the YOG.
There were also many people in public relations and media who helped promote the Nanjing 2014 YOG. The IOC disclosed that the recognition rate for YOG has hit 30% and readership of YOG-related articles on Weibo reached 600 million. The Nanjing 2014 YOG social media team played an essential role in the accomplishment and helped the Games acquire 1.1 million fans on YOG official social medial platforms, 480,000 internationally and 610,000 domestically. The social media team got a special boost from the IOC President when he took a “selfie” with the athletes to start a popular YOG trend on the Internet.
Another of the “champions” of the Nanjing 2014 YOG was the Tagou Martial Arts School who performed during both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and became overnight sensations in China and all over the world. The young acrobats went above and beyond the call of duty when they put togethera brilliant performance for the Closing Ceremony despite being asked to make an encore performance at the last minute.
The 20,000 volunteers were the heart and soul of the Nanjing 2014 YOG. Their boundless enthusiasm and hard work delivered the values of Olympic excellence, respect, and friendship to everyone throughout the Games.
