Keynote Speakers, New Informative Sessions Announced for PMI Global Congress 2014—North America

Event to feature sports legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson as opening keynote

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa.--()--Project Management Institute, the world's leading not-for-profit professional membership association for the project management profession, announced the preliminary program for the upcoming PMI® Global Congress 2014—North America, to be held 26 - 28 October in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

Among other Congress highlights, this year’s event will feature a keynote address by basketball legend and entrepreneur Earvin “Magic” Johnson, sharing insights on identifying unrecognized opportunities and how to capitalize on them for success. This presentation will inspire and enlighten anyone wishing to make a similar impact with their careers and business endeavors. Other high-profile keynote speakers will include Olympic champion speed skier Vince Poscente, dynamic motivational speaker Tamara Kleinberg and noted neuroscientist Dr. Daniel J. Levitin, author of the best-selling book The Organized Mind: Thinking Straight in the Age of Information Overload.

In addition to the keynote presentations, Congress attendees will have access to more than 160 collaborative education sessions, categorized across 18 leading areas of focus, including PMI’s first-ever Business Analysis and Requirements (BAR) Area of Focus educational track. The importance of these critical competencies is emphasized in PMI's 2014 Pulse of the Profession® in-depth report Requirements Management: A Core Competency for Project and Program Success, which found that when projects do not meet their original goals and business objectives, inaccurate requirements management is the primary cause of that outcome almost half of the time (47 percent).

The event will also see the debut of new and unique networking and outreach opportunities, including Open Jam, a series of informal discussions (offered in collaboration with the Agile Alliance) on relevant topics chosen by attendees and facilitated by experienced practitioners in agile business analysis and product management. Attendees can also collaborate with colleagues and earn professional development units (PDUs) at PMI X-Change breakfast discussions — member-driven conversations on a variety of topics.

Additional highlights of PMI® Global Congress 2014—North America will include:

  • PMI Professional Awards Gala and Reception.
  • Community Service Project, in partnership with HandsOn Greater Phoenix, inviting volunteers to help make improvements to John F. Long Elementary School.
  • Research Working Session (ROWS) featuring interactive expert panel discussions and breakout sessions.
  • Standards Program Working Session (SPWS) featuring a presentation from Orange Business Services about the challenges of institutionalizing formal project management standards across its global organization.
  • Virtual Congress On-Demand sessions, available online on Congress Day 3 and after the event.
