SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The owner of the Sacramento Republic soccer team who is parlaying sell-out crowds and the influence of the Sacramento Kings and Mayor Kevin Johnson to try to win a major league soccer franchise will address the Sacramento Press Club at a luncheon on Friday, August 22.
Warren Smith recently returned from Portland, where he, the Sacramento mayor and Sacramento Kings President Chris Granger met with league officials, who are busy deciding what city will win an expansion spot and become part of Major League Soccer.
A second August lunch on the following Tuesday will feature Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin, who was the top vote getter in the June primary election for State Controller – the only Republican to come in number one in the primary balloting for a statewide office.
After a suspenseful six weeks, Swearengin learned in mid-July who her opponent will be when former Assembly Speaker John Perez dropped his recount bid and Board of Equalization member Betty Yee became the second winner of the top-two primary battle.
The lunches, from noon to 1:15 p.m., will take place at the Capitol Plaza Ballroom, 1025 Ninth Street, 3rd Floor. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.
Tickets, $29 for members and $40 for non-members, may be purchased at www.sacpressclub.org. The RSVP deadline is 5 pm. Wednesday, August 20 for the Warren Smith lunch and 5 p.m. Friday, August 22 for the Ashley Swearengin lunch.
