Iceland’s Borg Brugghús Wins Three Gold & One Silver 2014 Global Craft Beer Awards

Two of the award-winning craft beers, Bríó and Garún Nr.19, are now available in North America.

REYKJAVIK, Iceland--()--Borg Brugghús, an Icelandic brewery known for its progressive craft beer, today announced that it won four medals at the Global Craft Beer Award 2014, where it competed against 68 breweries and over 200 beers. The Global Association of Craft Beer Brewers awarded gold medals to Bríó (Pilsner), Garún Nr.19 (Imperial Stout), and Úlfur Nr.3 (India Pale Ale), and a silver medal to Myrkvi Nr.13 (Chocolate or Coffee Beer) in their respective categories.

Since its establishment in 2010, Borg Brugghús has won several international awards and continues to strengthen Iceland’s diverse craft beer scene. The Icelandic brewery recently began expanding into the North American market as well. Bríó is widely available in Canada, and Garún Nr.19 is currently available in the U.S. and will be coming to Canada this fall.

Bríó, the first beer developed by Borg Brugghús, is a 4.8% ABV aromatic pilsner dry hopped with the noble Hallertauer Mittelfrüh hops from Bavaria. Bríó is named after the late Icelandic artist and bon viveur Steingrímur Eyfjörð, whose pseudonym, Bríó, means joy, vigor and vitality. This crisp beer also won gold at the 2012 World Beer Cup and 2012 World Beer Awards.

Garún Nr. 19 is an 11.5% ABV Icelandic Imperial Stout with a dark aura of intense richness and notes of chocolate, licorice and coffee. This deceptively smooth beer is named after the strong and brave heroine of one of Iceland’s most popular folk tales, “The Deacon of Dark River.” According to BeerAdvocate, Garún is the highest rated beer ever brewed in Iceland.
