Research and Markets: Coal Bed Methane: Produced Water - 2014 Insight Report

DUBLIN--()--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/46wf6z/coal_bed_methane) has announced the addition of the "Coal Bed Methane: Produced Water - Insight Report" report to their offering.

Coal bed methane (CBM) deposits, where methane is adsorbed in the pore structure and seams of coal, is a relatively underexploited source of gas. With technically recoverable reserves estimated at around 1700 Tcf (trillion cubic feet), which is equal to 15 years of current global gas demand, there appears to be considerable potential for development. Yet, actual production was only 2.7 Tcf in 2011 with nearly all of this occuring in the United States, Australia, Canada and China. With global consumption of natural gas projected to grow from 118 to 180 Tcf/yr by the year 2040, CBM is expected to a play a significant role to meet this demand.

Extracting methane from coal deposits was once considered the future of the US natural gas industry, but advances in shale gas technology have largely obscured its development, shifting investment away from coal bed methane (CBM). Estimated global gas deposits of over 180 trillion cubic meters have peaked interest and development in CBM, but local geology, technical requirements and the sheer volumes of water produced present challenges to production. Coal bed methane deposits produce some of the highest water intensities (i.e. volume of water per unit of energy extracted) of any oil and gas source. On average, CBM deposits produce 10 times the amount of water as compared to shale gas, making exploitation much more about water management than gas recovery. This is the reality faced in Australia, the new frontier of CBM development, also referred to as coal seam gas (CSG). Here tens of billions of dollars has been invested in new CSG-LNG facilities targeting the export market. This investment coincides with strict new regulations on water management, necessitating large investments in water treatment facilities.
