Nanjing’s Youth Olympic Village to Receive Athletes on August 12

NANJING, China--()--The Youth Olympic Village (YOV) will officially open its doors on August 12th to receive more than 6,000 residents including athletes, team officials, Young Ambassadors and reporters. The YOV will provide accommodation, catering, transportation, medical, and training services along with fun workshops for its residents during the Games.

The YOV is the heart of the Games and is a place where the athletes can relax, have fun and make friends when not engaged in competition. It features a ‘World Culture Village’ which showcases each of the 204 National Olympic Committees attending along with interactive workshops for participants to learn new skills and become future ambassadors of Olympism. A state-of-the-art digital center will be available for all residents to connect with families and fans back home, learn about social media and play a part in the YOG selfie campaign taking place throughout the Games. In addition, the ‘Learn and Share’ zone will offer athletes the chance to chat face-to-face with Olympians to learn more about having a successful athletic career and avoiding dangers such as doping and illegal gambling.

The YOV was designed to be both environmental-friendly and sustainable. To that end, it features an optical lighting system that uses no electricity, but instead collects sunlight and funnels it through pipes to light areas of the building to reduce carbon emissions. The water supply system combines cooling, heating and power (CCHP) to control temperature and contribute to the goal of energy conservation.

In order to meet the diverse needs of 6,000 villagers from all over the world, the YOV dining hall will provide four main cuisines including Asian, Mediterranean, European and Chinese along with many of Nanjing’s famous local dishes. During its operating period, the YOV will have more than 500 volunteers providing room service, health care and first aid 24 hours a day.
