SAN ANTONIO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Kinetic Concepts, Inc. announced that its CelluTome™ Epidermal Harvesting System was recognized in the July edition of Podiatry Today as a top 10 new product innovation in 2014. The innovation list was comprised by clinicians with experience of emerging technologies in areas such as surgical advances, wound care and antifungals.
One of the contributing experts, Lee C. Rogers, DPM, Medical Director, Amputation Prevention Center, Sherman Oaks Hospital, California, is among the first in the US to perform outpatient suction blister epidermal skin grafting using epithelium harvested with the CelluTome™ System to manage wounds. “We've had about six months of experience with this new tool and we are thoroughly impressed with its ease of use and application,” said Dr. Rogers. “In many cases, use of epidermal micrografts enabled us to avoid a more complex surgery that would have required anesthesia in the operating room. The use of outpatient epidermal grafting certainly has the potential to change the landscape of wound care."
The CelluTome™ System also made the number one spot in a recent piece by Wound Source, highlighting the “Top 5 Most Interesting Wound Care Products of 2014.” According to Miranda Henry, managing editor, Kestral Health Information, publishers of Wound Source, “This product defines the innovation of the wound care market.” Another KCI product, the ABThera™ Open Abdomen Therapy System, also made the top 5 this year.
Launched commercially in the US last year, the CelluTome™ System was designed to be an automated, precise and reproducible harvesting device that enables physicians to perform autologous epidermal skin grafting in the outpatient setting. For patients, the harvesting process is not painful, and physicians have reported that the donor site heals within a week.
“We strive to develop innovations that truly benefit our patients and restore normalcy to their lives,” said Ron Silverman, MD, chief medical officer, KCI. “The CelluTome™ System transforms the way physicians have traditionally harvested skin grafts, and we are pleased to receive recognition from such respected publications for this great technology.”
