PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Strategic Decisions Group (SDG) announced today that it has elected Dr. J. Eric Bickel to its Board of Directors. The firm also officially named Dr. Bickel an SDG Fellow, which distinguishes him as a professional whose extraordinary contributions to analytic disciplines allow the firm to maintain its competitive advantage. Dr. Bickel currently serves as associate professor at The University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin), in the Graduate Program in Operations Research & Industrial Engineering. Dr. Bickel also holds courtesy appointments in Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering and the Energy and Earth Resources graduate program. At UT-Austin, Dr. Bickel teaches courses and leads research in decision analysis and its application to major business and public policy decisions.
Dr. Bickel is also president-elect of the Decision Analysis Society. Outside of his work in academia, he works with clients in oil & gas, power and other industries on portfolio management, decision and risk analysis, and risk management. Having worked with SDG since 1995, Dr. Bickel previously co-led SDG’s executive education practice where he trained consultants, analysts, managers, and senior executives in the theory and practice of decision analysis.

Dr. Bickel has published dozens of research papers on a wide range of topics, including probabilistic modeling; probability assessment, biases, and scoring rules; value of information and portfolio decision analysis; discretization; utility theory; decision analysis education; and climate policy. His research into climate engineering was named as the top approach to address climate change by a panel of economists, including four Nobel Laureates. He holds an MS and PhD in engineering-economic systems from Stanford University and a BS in mechanical engineering with a minor in economics from New Mexico State University.
