YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Follow-up assessment by an independent certified lab showed no Listeria contamination on any product produced at the Youngstown bakery.
Today’s finding in conjunction with yesterday’s test results concludes the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) involvement in the voluntary product withdrawal by the Company. The Youngstown bakery is back in full production and shipping products to its customers.
Yesterday, an independent, certified lab confirmed that the strain of Listeria found within the Schwebel bakery facility in Youngstown is not the species that poses a risk to public health.
Production at the bakery was halted Monday when preliminary test results from internal routine environmental sampling conducted by Schwebel revealed the presence of Listeria in the facility. As a result and as a voluntary precautionary measure the Company immediately initiated a voluntary withdrawal of all products shipped from the facility and reported its findings to the FDA.
Though testing has now shown the withdrawn products never threatened public health, as the impacted products did not reveal the presence of Listeria, Schwebel will continue to honor any consumer returns of products produced at the Youngstown facility prior to July 22, 2014. This decision has been made as a courtesy to customers and with the intent to not confuse those who had already planned to participate in the return program.
“We appreciate and understand the general public’s concerns regarding our decision to withdraw products,” said Paul Schwebel, Company President. “We also recognize the impact this withdrawal had on our commercial and institutional customers. The Company voluntarily and proactively took these actions because the integrity of our product is paramount. This is a commitment from which we have not waivered in the 108 year history of our Company. We have and will continue to keep the safety of our consumers and the quality of our products at the forefront of our family business.”
Schwebel’s, founded in 1906, operates four bakeries in Ohio.
